We all know that 2010 is the year of the tiger represented by character Yin寅。This is indicated by the first month of the year in Chinese Solar Calendar. It denotes ‘the Coming of Spring’. Therefore, it is acceptable to say that it is associated with the wood element.
Take for example, Hai亥 Zi子 Chou丑，Yin寅 Mao卯 Chen辰. They are water, water, earth, wood, wood and earth elements respectively in most Chinese Metaphysic system.
What If I say the above are water, fire, metal, water, fire and metal elements respectively, do you say I have made a mistake?
I can also say that the above are water, fire, fire, metal, water and metal elements respectively, and I am still not wrong.
One of the comments on the 12 Growth Phases indicates the confusion between the interchangeable ability of earth with fire, and earth with water. Both are not wrong either.
It all depends on the kind of applications we are using. Earth with Fire refers to the application of Heavenly matters while Earth with Water refers to Earthly matters. Heavenly matters deal with Bazi and Divination while Earthly matters refer to Feng Shui et cetera. Within the Feng Shui system, the usage of the elements can be different as well.
Do not be fixated by one for all theory. Different planes within the same system may call for different elemental usage.

Zoe, I’m still pondering upon some basic matters. It is about Qi. I can not make it systematically in my mind.
Only a few questions:
1. What is the connection between Qi and Yin/Yang WuXing? Is it the manifestation of Qi? If yes in what way? or what aspect of Qi? It’s PHASE perhaps?
2. If Qi comes from 天地定位, why we still categorize it as 天气, 地气, also 人气? Heaven alone should not produce Qi, there must be Earth takes its role, why we have such 天气 and 地气?
BTW, this Categorization based on what aspect of Qi? Qi CYCLE?
It is similar to Yin Yang, if both interaction is needed to produce Qi, why sometimes we categorize it as Yin Qi and Yang Qi?
3. When Yang Gong school of thought categorize Qi as Internal Qi and external Qi, on what aspect of Qi is it based?

Hope you are keeping well.
I know it is confusing for learners. Especially, when you come to this space, we are debunking so many ‘conventional’ notions of Qi and YY5E. Let me try to explain:
1. Try seeing it this way: in one unit of Qi, we have YY5E.
This hypothesis does not qualify if this unit Qi is healthy & at which stage of growth cycle. These are dependent on:
(a) Yin-Yang balance
(b) the quality of 5E distribution within the 3 planes of HME Trilogy
Yes, PHASE is the correct concept for 5 Elements. E.g. when meeting Yin 寅 energies, let’s say the subject is Geng Metal DM and thus in Extinct phase. That will mean something in specific to a chart. And, it need not be negative.
What is perhaps missing in your understanding is that OTHER 9 Stems are also within this unit of Qi? (I am talking strictly BaZi)
They are also going through their own phases in Yin. E.g. Xin Metal is Conceiving, Jia Wood is in Officer phase and Yi Wood is Prosperous etc etc. If you only focus on Geng, you are missing the forest.
In short, Qi moves in cyclical manner and often spirally. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral#Spherical_spiral) Qi is very dynamic. And becos it is dynamic, we use specific methods allowing us to manipulate specific Qi. Thus, specific outcome is what we attain.
2. As above.
天地定位 simply means ‘Heaven’ (as in our 9 Spherical Heavens with the stars / planets) locking its absolute AND relative locations with ‘Earth’. This interlocking in itself is already HME Trilogy.
In matter-energy terms, these celestial objects radiate energies, incl Earth. (NASA is on this subject.)
We will have a section for researchers to contribute to a Qi Geo-tracking database.
In practical terms, Yin Qi simply means Yin patterns, cycles and formations. As long as these are +ve attributes, ‘Yang will automatically lives in Yin’.
3. Internal Qi and External Qi is just a relative sorting of Qi for specific purpose. The Door is usually the medium to demarcate.

BTW, Zoe I forget to ask some more terms about Qi…
It is the Sheng Wang Sha Tui Si [Qi], in San Yuan Xuan Kong system. From what I know, Xuan Kong Practitioner use this term when they investigate Palace-Star relationship.
What is it talking about actually? Is it San Yuan counterpart of San He 12 Growth Phase? Development stages of Qi like master Leo wrote?
Also about Gua, you ever wrote Gua is only an empty shells without first qualifying it through Zheng Wu Xing and Na Yin 5 Element. This resultant element termed as Gua Qi. (Oh my…New term of Qi +_+ rising again…).
Question: Why in some FS application we always relates Kan as water, Kun as Earth, etc which follows the Luo Shu element by superimposing Luo Shu to the Ba Gua? Thereafter we treat THIS Gua element as a host read the star elemental relationship with it…
Isn’t it supposed to be no element contained in this Gua? Or when we superimpose Luo Shu to the Ba Gua also mean we qualify Gua elemental quality?

SAN YUAN’s Sheng Wang Sha Tui Si [Qi] = Wu Yun (literal 5 Periods) or 五運

SAN HE’s 12 Growth Phases = Yin-Yang representation of 六氣
Together they are the 五運六氣 in 黃帝內經 Huang Di Nei Jing. Longitude & Latitude.
The manner you describe Gua usage is how others use Flying Star. Any way this is the Guest / Host application. Normally, most r checking how this guest interact with this host. Same element = gd. Counter = bad or money etc
In this analogy, we go further. We will check how many guests are there, check out the host’s environment – (rooms, placements, size etc), see which guests would get along to ‘friend’ this host & make our stay enjoyable, and, WHEN will they arrive. Same applies to hostile guests.
