Formation of Life Force

In theory, the purpose of a conception pillar is to establish what the Qi/energy is like when life starts to form within the mother’s womb.

Derivation of Conception Pillar

From《三命通会》, the derivation of the conception pillar is based on this line “胎元之取，唯有一法，以當生前三百日爲十月之氣，乃是受胎之正.”

The Early Heaven Pillars

Together with the natal Ba Zi chart, the conception pillar and the life pillar can be considered as the Early Heaven (“先天”) while the luck pillars are the Later Heaven (“后天”).

It is used commonly to divine what happens to a child after he or she is born. To a certain degree, this depends on the synchronicity and affinity of the reader with the child.

Application of Conception Pillar

In 《鬼谷子》, a hint of its application “if the birth sits on prosperous, one will be born in a wealthy family; if it meets on emptiness, poverty will give birth to complaints and resentment.”

In modern day applications, it is commonly used by practitioners to ascertain if a child will suffer from mental retardation, deformity or any other form of birth defects before he or she is born (caesarean births).

However, there are also concerns about the use of conception pillar because:

  • Ø not everyone is born after 10 months
  • Ø intercalations are not accounted for
